Connecting Through Poetry
To think everything began with an email and now over 30 middle school students in Lawrence will be seeing U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón speak at my alma mater Smith College. I feel extremely proud to be a Smithie and a Lawrencian and I hope this is just the beginning of a powerful collaboration between Lawrence and Smith, and I hope by the time Mary's students are ready to apply to college, they will think of Smith.

2022 Latinx Amplifier in Massachusetts
I feel incredibly honored to be recognized as a 2022 Latinx Amplifier in the state of Massachusetts for my leadership and creativity. I feel so proud to represent my hometown of Lawrence because it inspires my craft. Many of my poems are an homage to the people, places, tastes, and smells of the city; I see poetry in the screech of the bus brakes, I see poetry when a mother wraps her arms around her baby, and I see poetry in the life that sprouts from the concrete. Poetry is all around me in the city and it is beautiful. Thank you Amplify Latinx for this incredible honor, and for amplifying my voice and the voices of Lawrence.
This was a fun and interesting project to work on; Bailey Sarian talks all things history but with a dark spin, and this time she explored the dark history of diet culture. Her team reached out to me as a historical consultant on the subject on few months ago and it was released this May! I’ve always wanted to do research and pursue my scholarship and this felt like such a huge project to be apart of, especially because I worked with fat activist Virgie Tovar. She doesn’t know it but I’ve always been a huge fan of her work and have had my students read her book, “You Have The Right To Remain Fat.” I hope I can continue to build on my knowledge and make strides to challenge, shape, and redefine what beauty is, and how white supremacy, capitalism, and patriarchy continue to profit off of fear and self-loathing. Our bodies are too big and beautiful to shrink them!

Defining Fat Liberation: FAT LIBERATION – Fat liberation is a movement to push back on the harmful discrimination fat folks experience throughout society, from the doctor’s office, to public seating, and beyond.
