Speakings & Readings
Juneteenth Festival in Lawrence (6/22/24)
Performing at this year’s Juneteenth festival in Lawrence! Thankful to Michael Bastien and Lisa Miller-Gillespie of Greater Lawrence Fellowship of the Arts for including my spoken word set as part of this year’s festivities.
My two pieces “This is The Year” and “Alabanza: In Praise of Lawrence” are so important to me because they explicitly talk about systemic violence and racism. Alabanza was a powerful piece to perform in Lawrence (especially in The Common) for its themes of environmental and structural racism. It is in part a call to action, a moment of awareness raising, and a reminder to praise the places and people that make us.
I started writing when I was a child, and the more I wrote and read the more I valued its power to change minds and change the world. As long as I can write, I will.
